Hair Animation Methods
نویسنده
چکیده
Rendering and animation of hair is a difficult task, mainly because of the complex physical properties of hair and the large number of primitives involved. Various physical models and simplification methods have to be adopted. This paper presents the current state of the art both in the field of hair animation and rendering, as well as a brief description of work in progress on a custom hair animation system. Introduction Realistic animation and rendering of hair is a crucial part of presenting virtual humans. Without natural-looking hair, realism of the presented image is severly hampered. Unfortunately, rendering hair realistically is a difficult process. A typical human has more than 100,000 individual hair strands. Hair is partially translucent and exhibits complex light reflection properties. Matters are complicated further by hair’s anisotropic nature; the length of a typical hair strand is several orders of magnitude larger than its diameter. The great number of individual strands and their fine structure is a severe complication for animation techniques as well. Hair strands are in constant contact and affect each other in many ways, including surface friction, lipid cohesion, static electricity etc. Constant contact of such a large number of sub-pixel primitives makes usage of explicit simulation and collision detection impossible. The primary purpose of this paper is to present a review of current approaches used in hair animation and rendering. It also outlines my work in progress on a custom animation system.

متن کاملHair Animation with Collision Detection
We propose an efficient method for hair animation. The motion of hairs is modeled by a simplified physical simulation. Collision between hair and a human body or other objects is used to make a realistic hair animation. Fast collision detection is required because the number of hairs is very large. Therefore, a cylindrical representation of human body or other objects is created for efficient c...
متن کاملDirectable and Stylized Hair Simulation
Creating natural looking hair motion is considered to be one of the most difficult and time consuming challenges in CG animation. A detailed physics-based model is essential in creating convincing hair animation. However, hair animation created using detailed hair dynamics might not always be the result desired by creators. For this reason, a hair simulation system that is both detailed and edi...
متن کاملModelling and Animating Cartoon Hair
In this paper we present a technique for the modelling and animation of cartoon hair based on its tendency to be drawn and animated in clumps. In our approach the primary shape and motion of the hair is defined by an animated NURBS surface, thus allowing animators greater artistic control. The basis of the hair clumps is formed by key hair curves that are generated along the isocurves of the or...
متن کاملStyling by Painting and Real Time Animation of Hair using Basis-dependent Hair Strands
Techniques to simulate hair in virtual humans focus on hair modeling, hair animation and hair rendering. We propose a system for modeling and animating in real time using standard OpenGL on commodity graphic cards. For styling, we propose a paint tool to determine a set of gray scale images that allow us to establish hair density and hair length values, as well as other useful parameters, and f...
